This virtual issue contains a compilation of highly cited and influential papers on 17 of the largest lakes of the world. Given their size, large lakes are sometimes best understood using principles and tools of oceanography, which is an approach called “freshwater oceanography” in a guest editorial by Harvey Bootsma. I was inspired to put together this virtual issue after spending several months at the Large Lakes Observatory at the University of Minnesota, Duluth, which has graciously hosted me during part of my research sabbatical. While there, it became clear that working on large lakes is difficult due to the extra labor and resources required to simply sample. This work also requires coordination between disciplines and institutes across international boundaries to address research topics that often respond to the basic needs of society (e.g., drinking water, subsistence fisheries, transportation and swimming at the beaches). These research endeavors would not be possible without substantial investments by a range of research partners including government agencies, the private sector and other non-governmental organizations. These seminal works represent the first part of our journey to understand the limnology of these large ecosystems. I hope this resource will be helpful to researchers, policymakers and educators involved in the study and protection of large lakes around the world.
