John Marra received a BS from Oregon State University, spent four years in the U.S. Navy, and then went to Dalhousie University, where he received a Ph.D. in Biological Oceanography. He spent most of his career, from post-doctoral fellow to Doherty Senior Scholar, at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University. During that time he spent two years at NASA Headquarters as the Program Officer in the Biological Oceanography Program. In 2007, he accepted a position as Professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences and Director of the Aquatic Research and Environmental Assessment Center at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York. He lives in Brooklyn.
